Emily & Mike's children

It takes a little bit of planning when you bring a new baby into the house to avoid feelings of jealousy. Keep in mind, when the baby belongs to everyone in the family there is less of a chance of feelings of rivalry.

My mother was a wonderful nana when it came to teaching little ones. When my sisters and I had our babies, mom would tell the big brothers and sisters that  "mommy is bring home your baby."  So from the very beginning our older children thought we had a baby just for them.

When it comes time to feeding your newborn, gather together a basket or bag of toys, puzzles, or books to occupy your toddler:

  • videos
  • books
  • puzzles
  • CD-ROM's

Add a snack to alleviate boredom. These diversions will be more effective if they seem special, so put the basket away afterward and only bring it out again the next time you feed the baby.

Finding a room where you can close the door to feed the baby is a wonderful way to entertain your toddler and you won't be wondering where your toddler is or what their doing while you're feeding the baby.

Tip: Learn how to breastfeed your baby while lying down before leaving the hospital so all of you can rest together.
